KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 - Former minister in the Prime Minister's Department for Religious Affairs Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom has claimed trial to charges related to the alleged misappropriation of 860 million ringgit from the Pilgrims Fund Board, known as Tabung Haji.
The charges stem from claims that the funds were channelled into real estate investments in Saudi Arabia. Jamil Khir appeared before the Sessions Court here today to enter his plea. The prosecution alleges that the transactions took place during his tenure as a minister overseeing religious affairs, a role that included oversight responsibilities connected to Tabung Haji.
Tabung Haji is a government-linked institution that manages savings for Muslims intending to perform the pilgrimage to Mecca. The fund holds billions in deposits from millions of account holders across the country. Any suggestion of mismanagement involving such a large sum has drawn significant public attention, given the institution's role in safeguarding pilgrimage savings.
The court set bail at a sum to be determined and scheduled the next mention for a later date. Jamil Khir's legal team indicated they will contest the charges. If convicted, the former minister could face lengthy prison terms and heavy fines under provisions covering criminal breach of trust.
The case continues as prosecutors prepare to present evidence in the coming months.
