Authorities have reported that the scammer uses a spoofed phone number to make it appear as if the call is coming from the police department, adding an extra layer of deception. The impersonator often claims that the business is under investigation or that there are outstanding fees that need to be settled immediately.
Police officials urge all business owners to remain vigilant and to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a police officer before providing any information or making payments. They recommend that businesses hang up and contact the police department directly if they receive such calls.
