More than a decade after his death in 2009, Michael Jackson's estate continues to generate staggering wealth, now valued at over $5 billion. But behind the numbers lies a bitter legal battle between his daughter, Paris Jackson, and the estate's executors. The fight centers on control of the massive fortune, which includes a half-stake in the Sony/ATV music catalog, a publishing empire that holds rights to songs by The Beatles, Taylor Swift, and other legends. The estate also owns Jackson's master recordings, a lucrative Las Vegas show, and a steady stream of licensing deals.
The legal dispute erupted when Paris Jackson challenged a 2017 decision by the executors to sell part of the catalog to Sony for $287.5 million. She argues the sale undervalued the assets and was made without proper transparency. The executors, who have overseen the estate's remarkable recovery from $500 million in debt to a multi-billion-dollar operation, claim the sale was a necessary move to stabilize the finances. A Los Angeles judge recently ruled that Paris can proceed with her lawsuit, setting the stage for a potentially explosive trial.
As for Neverland Ranch, the sprawling 2,700-acre property in Los Olivos, California, once Jackson's fantasy playground, it remains largely abandoned. After years of neglect and failed attempts to sell, the estate finally offloaded the property in 2020 to a billionaire investor for $22 million. The new owner has since stripped the land of its amusement park rides and renamed it, erasing almost all traces of the King of Pop. Today, the ranch sits as a quiet, overgrown ghost of its former self, a stark contrast to the billion-dollar empire Jackson left behind.
