TikTok rental scams are on the rise. 68% of listings show warning signs, study finds

Rental scams have been a persistent headache on platforms like Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist for years. But a fresh wave of fraud appears to be taking root on TikTok, where short-form video is now being used to advertise apartments and houses. According to a recent study, a striking 68 percent of rental listings on the app show clear warning signs of a potential scam.

Researchers looked at hundreds of posts tagged with rental-related hashtags and found that many shared common red flags. These included requests for upfront deposits before a viewing, pressure to act within hours, and landlords who refused video calls or in-person meetings. Some listings even used photos pulled from other real estate sites, a tactic that is easy to pull off in a fast-scrolling feed.

The problem is growing because TikTok's algorithm pushes content based on engagement, not verification. A flashy video of a cheap downtown loft can rack up thousands of views in a day, even if the unit does not exist. Unlike traditional listing sites, there is no built-in system to confirm the poster's identity or the property's legitimacy.

For renters, the advice is simple. Never send money through wire transfer or payment apps, always ask for a signed lease, and insist on a live tour, either in person or over video. If a deal feels too good to be true, it probably is. Scammers are counting on the speed and excitement of social media to catch people off guard, and the numbers suggest they are succeeding.
